About this trip

What's this anyway?
The QCMS Boston Odyssey 2002 is a trip bringing a group of ten fifth grade students from rural Mississippi to Boston, MA for a five day trip during the month of May 2002.

Why bring kids from Mississippi to Boston?
Children in Quitman County, Mississippi, are just as smart as children in more affluent areas, just as loving, and just as deserving.  However, many of the opportunities that children in more affluent areas take for granted are denied to students in areas like Quitman County.  This trip will give these students a chance to see and experience things I took for granted growing up that sadly most children in this part of Mississippi never get a chance to see.

Who's running this trip?
That would be me!  My name is Shenkiat Lim.  I'm a 2nd year Teach For America teacher originally from the Boston area.  I teach 5th grade Social Studies at the Quitman County Middle School.

How can I find out about last year's trip?
I ran a similar trip in June of 2001.  Information on that trip is available in the trip newsletter.  There is also an article from the Lexington Minuteman about the trip.

How can I help?
Please consider contributing to help finance this trip.  You can send checks made out to "QCMS Excursion Fund" to the address below.  Our fundraising goal for ten students and two chaperones is $4,000.  If you would like to help in other ways, please e-mail me at [email protected].
